The Best Dehumidifiers for Mold and Mildew

Mold needs moisture, so the fix is holding humidity below the point where it can grow, all the time. We scored units on capacity and continuous drainage, the two things that keep humidity down day and night.

About the pint numbers: capacity ratings on this page mix two standards. hOmeLabs lists DOE test pints, measured at cooler standard conditions, while AEOCKY, DECIUU and Trazico headline max condition pints measured at 95°F and 90 percent humidity. A max rating runs roughly two to two and a half times the DOE figure for the same machine, so the table marks each number to let you compare like with like.

Our method

How we score

Every dehumidifier runs through the same scorecard, so the numbers mean the same thing across brands. I weight what owners feel day to day, then roll it into one score out of 100. Capacity and coverage carry the most weight, because a unit too small for the space never wins however nice it looks. I set scores before checking prices. Capacity figures follow each manufacturer listing, and where a maker publishes only a peak number we show it as "up to", so weigh capacity alongside coverage rather than on its own.

Buying guide

How to choose the right one

Hold humidity low, continuously

The whole game with mold is keeping moisture below the growth threshold at all times, not just when you remember to switch a unit on. That means enough capacity for the space plus continuous drainage so it never stops for a full tank.

Size up and drain out

Pick a unit with headroom on capacity and set it to hold around 50 percent. Pair it with a pump or hose so it runs unattended, and you remove the conditions mold needs to return.

Quick questions

Dehumidifier FAQ

What humidity level stops mold?
Keep relative humidity below about 50 percent and mold struggles to grow. Below 60 percent slows it, but 50 or a little under is the target to actually hold the line, which is why a unit that can run continuously matters.
Will a dehumidifier remove existing mold?
No, it stops new growth by removing the moisture mold needs. You still have to clean off any mold that is already there, then let the dehumidifier keep the area dry so it does not come back.
Should I get a pump or a drain hose?
A gravity drain hose is simplest and works when there is a floor drain or sink below the tank. A built in pump can push water up and out to a higher sink or window, which is what you want in a basement with no low drain. If neither fits, you empty the tank by hand.

I run My Best Dehumidifier and score every unit on one consistent scorecard: capacity, coverage, drainage, owner rating and value. I do not sell dehumidifiers and no brand owns any part of this site. Scores are set before prices are checked, so a good deal never buys a better ranking. More about how this site works.
