About the pint numbers: capacity ratings on this page mix two standards. hOmeLabs lists DOE test pints, measured at cooler standard conditions, while AEOCKY, DECIUU and Trazico headline max condition pints measured at 95°F and 90 percent humidity. A max rating runs roughly two to two and a half times the DOE figure for the same machine, so the table marks each number to let you compare like with like.

Our method

How we score

Every dehumidifier runs through the same scorecard, so the numbers mean the same thing across brands. I weight what owners feel day to day, then roll it into one score out of 100. Capacity and coverage carry the most weight, because a unit too small for the space never wins however nice it looks. I set scores before checking prices. Capacity figures follow each manufacturer listing, and where a maker publishes only a peak number we show it as "up to", so weigh capacity alongside coverage rather than on its own.

How to choose the right one

Quiet first

For a bedroom, pick the quietest unit that still fits the room. A slightly smaller machine that cycles on and off is far more restful than a large one running continuously.

Right size, then set and hold

Size to the room, then set a humidity target near 50 percent and let it hold. This keeps the room comfortable and the noise down at the same time.

Key numbers

Dehumidifier facts and stats worth citing

The numbers below put the picks in context. Each one names its source, so you can quote it, check it, or use it to size your own setup.

30–50%

The indoor relative humidity range the EPA recommends. Above 60 percent, conditions start favoring mold and dust mites.

Source: US EPA
Below 50%

The humidity level cited for keeping dust mites, one of the most common indoor allergens, in check.

Source: US EPA
~40 dB

Roughly the sound level of a quiet library. The quietest small dehumidifiers run near this level, while big basement units land closer to normal conversation.

Source: General acoustics reference
~13%

How much less energy an ENERGY STAR certified dehumidifier uses than a comparable conventional unit of the same size.

Source: ENERGY STAR
65°F

The temperature the DOE has tested capacity at since 2019, down from 80°F. That change is why a unit sold as 50 pints today matches what older listings called 70 pints.

Quick questions

Dehumidifier FAQ

How do I keep a bedroom dehumidifier quiet at night?
Choose a smaller unit sized to the room, set it to a target humidity so it cycles rather than runs flat out, and place it a little away from the bed. A compact unit holding 50 percent is much quieter than a big one working hard.
What size dehumidifier do I need?
Match capacity to the space and how damp it is. For a normal room up to about 1,500 sq ft an 8 to 20 pint unit is plenty. A medium damp area wants 25 to 40 pints. A large or wet basement needs 45 pints or more. When in doubt, size up, since a larger unit runs less often and lasts longer.
Is it safe to run a dehumidifier while sleeping?
Yes. Modern units run cool and shut off when the tank is full or the target is reached. Give it a bit of clearance for airflow and empty it regularly, or run a hose so it never overflows.

I run My Best Dehumidifier and score every unit on one consistent scorecard: capacity, coverage, drainage, owner rating and value. I do not sell dehumidifiers and no brand owns any part of this site. Scores are set before prices are checked, so a good deal never buys a better ranking. More about how this site works.
